Fancy James Perce Conference Table Does Double Duty

June 6, 2011 | Posted by bLavish as Furniture at 10:30 pm | Comments off

James Perse is known for making quirky, but beautifully modern furniture. This teak conference table is no exception. It has all the quality that consumers expect from Perse, but with an added bonus; it’s also a ping pong table.

This may seem a little weird, but consider a few things. First, ping pong is one of the most popular sports in the world. Some people may wonder at its inclusion in the “sport” category, but that’s another matter. Second, think of all the office situations in which a little healthy competition (as opposed to the cutthroat kind) could be beneficial. This ping pong table is a stroke of genius as far as I’m concerned.

The beautiful look will make it at home in any high end office, and the gaminess will add a little levity to the world of cubicles and conference calls. Don’t all of us deserve a little extra levity??

Kieth Haring By House Of Field

June 3, 2011 | Posted by bLavish as Apparel, Artsy Fartsy at 12:12 am | Comments off

Fashion and art are two great tastes that taste great together. For years, artists and designers have been collaborating to produce wearable art. This is more of a posthumous collaboration, though, since one of the collaborators, Kieth Haring, died in 1990. Before and since then, he acquired legendary pop artist status, and Patria Field pays homage to him in her line for The House of Field.

You know Patricia Field because she was the stylist for Sex and the City, but fashionistas have known about her for decades. Patricia Field is always on the cutting edge of what’s happening next, especially more recently, when she’s become a driving force behind the trends. This line is eye-poppingly colorful and super graphic. It has a youthful playfulness that represents Haring’s work well.

The line is of a totally reasonable price point, too. Prices start at $38 for a cotton tote and go up from there for jewelry and apparel.

Laurence Stephen Lowry Painting Sells For A Record $9.2 Million

June 2, 2011 | Posted by bLavish as Artsy Fartsy, Auctions at 11:55 pm | Comments off

Laurence Stephen Lowry was a British artist painting around the second World War who was known for his sketchy renderings of “matchstick men”. This intriguing painting from 1949 entitled, “The Football Match” in considered a modern masterpiece by collectors. It recently sold at Christie’s for $9.2 million, twice as much as it was expected to go for, and also twice as much as any other Lowry painting.

Why all the excitement over this large format landscape? Critics say it encapsulates the spirit of the town gathered for an afternoon of sport in Lowry’s own indelibly unique way. The subdued color palette shows an extensive view of Manchester, in which the center of activity is the match. The tiny “matchstick” figures huddled together en masse give the audience a sense of the camaraderie. Lowry’s point of view is inimitable and expertly rendered. Let’s see how much this sale drives up the value of his other paintings!

The Ultimate Custom Waterfall By DNA 11

May 27, 2011 | Posted by bLavish as Artsy Fartsy at 11:33 pm | Comments off

DNA 11 makes portraits and design pieces that are customized in the most personal way possible: they are representation’s of the client’s DNA. Yes, you read that correctly. This waterfall is definitely a piece that is all you.

If you want a personalized waterfall (or portrait, they make those, too), DNA 11 will send you a kit to help you collect a sample of your own DNA. Then you get to choose the color and style of the piece. Talk about personalization!

While I want to write this idea off as gimmicky, which it absolutely is, there is something beautiful about the design as well. That, and there’s nothing like knowing that a little piece of you (or all of you) has been preserved for all of time.

Van Gogh Still Life Up For Auction At Rau Antiques

May 27, 2011 | Posted by bLavish as Artsy Fartsy, Auctions at 10:12 pm | Comments off

Vincent Van Gogh is famous for a lot of things. First and foremost, he created his own inimitable style within the Impressionist movement. Second, he cut off his own ear, although we don’t know whether this was because of frustration over auditory hallucinations or a frustrated love affair or both. Regardless, he is a master of both modern painting and of modern life. It is for these reasons that his work is hard to come by on the open market.

Hard, but not impossible. This remarkable still life, entitled “Still Life With Two Sacks And A Bottle” has recently gone up for auction at Rau Antiques. I am personally fascinated by it. Any fan of Van Gogh will recognize both his signature style and also the fact that this painting is unusual within that style. It has less obvious brush strokes than much of his work. Some might consider the piece less painterly than his more famous works, but the distinctive quality of his artistry shines through, nonetheless.

Figaro Speakers by SW Speakers

May 16, 2011 | Posted by bLavish as Gadgets at 4:58 pm | (1) Comment »

I’m not much of a technophile. I like my music on good, old-fashioned vinyl records played through good, old-fashioned speakers. But every now and again some beautiful bit of technology comes along that warms my throwback heart. These Firgaro speakers by SW Speakers are one of these delicious items.

The Figaros have an amazing combination of avant garde and high tech styling and traditional materials. The carbon fiber exterior is built for beautiful amplification, and is gorgeously contrasted with the carved and twisted mahogany bases. Its a weird mish-mash of aesthetics, but one that works out remarkably well. The speakers themselves look like some sort of sci fi alien eyeballs, but the wood base is perfectly classic.

Don’t be fooled by the small size of the speakers, the Figaros are designed to delivered big big sound. The Swedish and Austrian craftsmanship is enviable, to say the least. So, if you’re an audiophile looking for something new and unique, the Figaros might be right up your alley.

La Vie en Rose Watches by Chopard

May 12, 2011 | Posted by bLavish as For Her, Timepieces at 4:17 pm | Comments off

Chopard has just released a special line for summer. It’s called the Happy Sport la Vie en Rose line, named after the famous song by French chanteuse Edith Piaf. It’s an interesting tribute, as the soft feminine styling of the line isn’t particularly in line with that of Ms. Piaf. I guess it’s just the emblematic rose design that inspired the name.

Regardless, these sparkly pastel timepieces are quite sweet. They each have an enamel rose on them, but with varying degrees of bling. I prefer the sleeker version, with the rose gold bezel and floating diamonds. The more elaborate version has a rose sapphire and diamond encrusted bezel plus floating diamonds, plus pave diamond detailing on the rose. Honestly, I think it’s a little much, but that’s to be expected from a minimalist like me.

The La Vie en Rose line is typically high Chopard quality, with all Swiss quartz movements. One of these would make an extravagant belated Mother’s day gift for a very lucky woman.

Luxury Yotel Hotel Coming To New York This June

April 13, 2011 | Posted by bLavish as Estate of the Day, Tid Bits & News at 7:55 am | Comments off

The first Yotel Hotel this side of the Atlantic is heading to New York this June and you don’t want to miss a chance to peek at this luxury hotel.

Yotel specializes in smaller luxury rooms, or cabins as Yotel calls them, for traveling executives who tire of all the wasted square footage of suites.  The new Hotel will be located in the new 60-story LEED-certified glass tower Middle of Manhattan, which is just a few blocks from Times Square.

Each of Yotel’s nearly 700 rooms will offer visitors all the comfort of a luxury hotel in New York at a much smaller scale – rooms, or “cabins” as they are called, only occupy about ten by seventeen feet of space. It’s enough for a sumptuous bed, a super-compact bathroom, and an ultraluxe “techno wall” featuring a state-of-the-art flat screen television and music station. Check-in will be fully automated, airport style, and luggage will be handled and stored by the luxury hotel’s friendly Yo-bots. Meanwhile, downstairs Yotel plans to go big with a super-hip Japanese inspired restaurant called Dohyo and a swank lounge worthy of the city.

Sounds like just what the busy executive traveler needs, and we can’t wait for our already-booked NYC trip to try this new Yotel out.
