Bottega Veneta’s BVX Watch

November 15, 2010 | Posted by bLavish as Timepieces at 11:20 pm | Comments off

Bottega Veneta has been making a beeline to the top of the fashion design houses for the past few seasons. Their minimal, cutting edge design aesthetic is always ahead of the game, and their first foray into watch design is similarly innovative.

Bottega went to Swiss watchmaker Girard-Perregaux to produce the BVX, because they’re the one of the last Swiss firms that still creates all its movements in-house. The watch has a gorgeous textured titanium face and uses nail heads instead of numerals. It’s adjustable crocodile band is sleek and exotic.

Thoma Maier, the designer of the watch says, “You look at it and slowly realize that you’ve never seen a watch like this before.” That’s a bold statement, but one that is nonetheless true. It’s modern, timeless design is made for someone with impeccable clean and minimal taste who doesn’t care about logos. That’s right, there’s absolutely no logo on the watch. Bottega Veneta’s motto is “when your own initials are enough”. Indeed.

Watch This!

Continuing the perpetually popular skeleton watch trend, we’re happy to feature one of the most expensive watches in the world: the Tecnica Skeleton Chronograph ($850,000).

It features include a platinum case, and a cathedral chime among other necessities. The Parmigiani Fleurier design house is quickly carving out a very defined niche among skele-watch connoisseurs.

The Parmigiani Fleurier Tourbillion collection includes eight different men’s skeleton watches, each more impressive than the last. My personal favorite is the Westminster, which features an 18k rose gold bezel set with as many diamonds as you wish to purchase.

For those who want the skeleton look at a bare-bones price, Amazon.com has a few available. Not Parmigiani Fleurier of course, but knock-offs that appear just as impressive to those who aren’t as aware of the trend.

Breitling for Bentley Introduces New Timepieces

June 3, 2010 | Posted by bLavish as Timepieces at 8:34 pm | Comments off

Breitling has recently introduced its newest timepieces for 2010 that now includes all of the new introductions from Basel. Last year, the company celebrated its 125th anniversary. Many people don’t realize that Breitling is one of the only remaining family businesses in the Swiss watch industry and have had only five “pilots” at the helm over the entire time.

Two special introductions this year are the new Superocean and the Breitling for Bentley Supersports. The Supersports is named after Bentley’s most powerful performance car and is limited to only 1,000 pieces worldwide. The Superocean dives into the depths of the oceans in five different hues. The Chronomat B01, which was introduced last year, proved to be their number one watch for 2009 in its first year. This special timepiece is motored by Breitling’s 100% in-house movement.

Crafted in steel and issued in a worldwide limited edition of 1,000, the Bentley Supersports series carries a bezel adorned with an elegant raised and knurled motif evoking the characteristic design of Bentley controls. Beneath the ultra-sporty, powerful bodywork beats an exclusive Breitling for Bentley motor chronometer. It is complemented by a 12-hour counter and a central scale with hundredth of an hour or hundredth of a minute graduations. The dashboard-style dial features a “variable tachometer” with circular slide rule. The Bentley Supersports is fitted with a rubber strap or a speed bracelet ensuring a perfect hold on the wrist.

In the fall, Breitling will open a new store in New York. For more information, visit www.breitlingusa.com.

Wow, when Cabestan and Ferrari team up, they leave the luxury competition behind, that’s for sure.  In their first collaboration, Scuderia and luxury car maker Ferrari have created one of the finest watches we’ve ever seen, and at $30,000 it had better be!

Featuring a design combination of the new Cabestan Nostromo and the existing Cabestan Winch Vertical Tourbillon, Scuderia Ferrari One is equipped with carbon fiber in the middle bridge section and probably uses Ferrari materials used in seats or steering wheels to make the strap. Priced at $300,000, this masterpiece will be a limited edition of 60 pieces and will be available only to Ferrari clients.

Mahatma Gandhi’s Zenith Pocket Watch On Auction

February 12, 2009 | Posted by bLavish as Auctions, Timepieces at 11:00 am | (2) Comments »

Though Mahatma Gandhi was not one who had many prized possessions, he did enjoy his personal Zenith Pocket Watch which will soon be up for auction.

Before Gandhi died, he gifted his grandniece and assistant, Abha Gandhi, his Zenith alarm pocket watch which soon after entered into a private collection.

The 1910-1915 watch is not in the best of conditions, but with a timepiece such as this you have to decide if it should remain in antique disrepair or if you prefer Gandhi’s watch to be restored to its original, working state.

The auction for the watch alone is expected to go between $200,000 & $30,000.

Thanks to reader Ben we have the skinny on a watch that’s up for auction this very holiday season.  No, it’s not too late to give someone the gift they deserve.

This Christmas will see Joe DiMaggio’s watch hit the auction block.  A Wittnauer Electro-Chron, this is the very first watch of its class, being the first to require a battery, and the last of its class, requiring a tuning fork.

Joe’s watch is engraved on the back with the words:

Old Timers’ Day
7-28-62
Joe DiMaggio

The watch will reportedly go for between $10,000 – $12,000 when the auction takes place at the Antiquorum later this month.
