Cold Weather Leads To Virginian Ice Wine

August 7, 2007 | Posted by Allison as Spirits & Palliatives, Tid Bits & News at 12:00 pm | (1) Comment »

wine-troubles-winter-8-7-07.jpgAlthough ice wines are typically associated with regions in the far north, due to last fall’s extreme cold weather, AmRhein Wine Cellars in Virginia is taking advantage of last year’s cold spell.

In November 2006, most of the grapes at the Virginian winery froze, so they are making lemons out of lemonade & making a special sweet dessert wine out of nature’s sour weather.

It will take more grapes to make the wine as well as more time fermenting, but the aftermath should be a sweet bottle of ice wine sold for around $45.

Via Genova Luxury Water

luxury-water-7-17-07.jpgI’m sure there was a time when water was just water.  And more than likely, many countries probably make fun of those who not only have an abundance of water, but also enjoy expensive, luxury water.

Such as Via Genova, for instance.  Via Genova is a luxury water bar that features nearly 80 different kinds of water, including the 10 Thousand BC water from British Columbia which goes for around $30 as well as the Bling water which goes for $55.

First I have to tell the difference between good wine & if that wasn’t hard enough I now have to know what good water is?!  Where will it end?

Why does it just make sense that Yoko Ono would design a label for the Nittardi Winery?  Oh yeah, because wine is something I tend to associate with the artist.  Cheap shot there, sorry.

Anyhoo, Yoko is now the 25th artist that has been asked to create an original label for the winery.  The Yoko label has been designed for a Chianti that has been made from 97% Sangiovese grape and 3% local Canaiolo grape.

Ono’s design is entitled ”Imagine you,” & depicts bottles and glasses.

Oil Shortages Mess Up Scottish Whisky Festival

May 30, 2007 | Posted by Allison as Spirits & Palliatives at 8:00 am | (3) Comments »

bruich-5-30-07.jpgIt’s a sad day for the people of Islay.  Due to oil shortages, the stills at the Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay Island have come to a still.

The Islay Whisky Festival was underway, but now without the needed oil, no one can even distill a darn thing.  Apparently, tankers have not been able to dock on the Scottish island due to low tides.  Well, it looks like the festival goers will just have to turn to truffles instead.

So, it’s a Friday.  It’s only lunchtime & you’re already busting to go home & get out to the movie theater to see the epic movie 300.  You can’t work, that’s for sure.

That’s where I come in with the Glenfiddich Scotch Whisky Fellowship.  This fellowship, as it were, was set up by the United States ambassadors for Glenfiddich.  I didn’t know where was even such a thing, did you?

Their brand new Website tells you the story of the Scotch whiskey as well as the what goes into the production of such a fine spirit.  At the end of the tale, there is a nice little quiz.  If you pass with flying colors, you get yourself a certificate at the Apprentice level.  Now you can actually start enjoying your Friday, am I right?
