Hillwood Estate, Washington, D.C.

October 7, 2010 | Posted by bLavish as Estate of the Day at 11:00 pm | Comments off

If you can’t afford your own mansion with elaborate gardens, an extensive art collection, and a collection of furniture and objet owned from several generations of royalty, you can at least visit one. And there’s few likely to be as impressive as the former home of Marjorie Merriweather Post, heiress of the cereal fortune.

This museum/mansion is located in Washington, D.C., although from the 25 acres of extensive landscaping, it is difficult to ascertain its urban location. It was designed by John Deibert in 1926 for Mrs. Henry Parsons Erwin, and Post moved into the home in 1957. It is decorated in an eclectic and elaborate style. The Jewish Times says of Post’s home:

In Ms. Post’s day, guests came to Hillwood for three types of occasions— a formal lunch or dinner, a garden party or an evening dance— but for many, the highlight of any visit was the chance to gaze upon Ms. Post’s stunning collection of Fabergé eggs, as well as the diamond crown worn by Empress Alexandra at her marriage to Nicholas II.

Well, the home is no longer reserved for formal occasions, although you can, of course, rent the space for the right price. Now, any uninvited guest can simply walk in, pay the admission fee, and have a look around.
