Lots of bad decision making going on there. Could start a fire? Keep it going, make it as big as you can. Car had gas? Don't use it to keep warm, dig out the car in the daytime, and go back the way you came in to main road. Looking for help? Don't walk down to a ravine, no way back up. Stay on the road....walk for 1 hour and then return to car....that's if you left the car in the first place. Helicopters after 9 days? Hey, they should have been up there after 2 days, this was a reliable family with children....not some runaways. He didn't have to die, they didn't have to spend so much time waiting for rescue.
