Fleur de Lys: Most Expensive Estate in the West

Forbes has named Fleur de Lys the most expensive estate in the West.

The luxurious Beverly Hills, California estate is currently on the market for $125 million and is modeled after Louis XIV’s palace at Versailles. 

On the market since late 2007, the Fleur de Lys property is tempting with its 45,000 square feet of living space, 50 seat screening room and a library overflowing with first editions.  Oh, and did we mention the nine car garage?

    For all the effort and money spent to replicate a European palace, “Fleur de Lys” looks like a lifeless, weakly-proportioned (but extravagantly expensive) stage set; it has monotonous windows, an overscaled portico, and chimneys scattered here and there, rather than enhancing the symmetry of the rest of the design and giving the roof a much-needed upward lift. As such, it’s a poor man’s idea of a rich man’s house, with lots of unnecessary rooms, gold leaf and chandeliers (one even in the pool house, for cripes sake). Robertson Partners could learn a lot from studying the work of Richard Morris Hunt, architect of the infinitely superior Vanderbilt mansions, particularly “The Breakers” in Newport, Rhode Island.
