At the guerilla artist Banksy’s L.A. show this week, Angelina Jolie went banksy on Banksy. Jolie spent nearly $400,000 on three pieces of his work.
Jolie snatched up “Picnic”, the pictured painting, a portrait of a man hit over the head with a pie & a piece entitled “Bullet-Ridden Bust.”
“Picnic” alone cost $226,000, the other two works $75,000. See more photos of this elusive and creative artist here.

anyone who knows or has ever met banksy..as i have ( he did the vote less grafitti on our wall in brighton) would,nt consider him any kind of sell out the art world and business is it’s own ridiculous megalith…the artist is not obliged to respect those that pay for his art…he still does and believes in public art aht it is and what he does is simply that….eg “what he does” to coin a cliche but if someone wants to pay stupid amounts for fashionable art consumption it say even more about the banality of the caitalist consumer world than it does about the artist…personally i wouldn.t pay for a banksy but if i shat ona rug and angelina jolie wanted to buy it and look like a pair of tits for doing it then what price could i put on that. conceptual art involving liberating a celeb from their purse whilst ridiculing them aint new…remember goya’s royal portraits of his patrons….they look like inbred monkeys…..so…..no banksy is just banksy passing comment klf burnt a million quid for art afer all! banksys art is still free and on the streets but if you live in la la angeles celebville then hey they don’t getr out much do they….respect to banksy disrespect to the patronage of non entity celebrity….what aload of tits angelina…who gets the last laugh…..cheers ting

I think he is smart selling to celebities, It not only Makes him a fair amount of cash for his effort BUT also gets his views out to the general public that might not have ever heard of him before.

I don’t care if Banksy sells his work, more power to him, earning cash for doing what he’s good at. I just hate the fact that Angelina Jolie bought it, now little sheep are just going to like Banksy because she does and pretend to be deep and understanding as they debate about the statements Banksy makes.

Banksy is very smart to be able to extract so much money legally.
Considering all the risk he has taken illegally painting walls, he deserves every penny!

Basically Banksy is a great artist. Very smart, with agreat style. But those who think you need to be a deep thinker to understand his work are just wrong. He is conveying obvious messages in a way that everyone can understand and appreciate.
As for celebrities buying his work and leading him to be named as a ‘sell out’… well thats just a result of people feeling disappointed at the fact that banksy is no more an underground artist. He has entered the mainstream. and those who feel his work such be appreciated less for this are probably the individuals who partly only liked his work due to the fact that it was underground and therefore ‘trendy’.
No matter what you choose as your profession or career, if somebody offered you a huge amount of money to do something you are already doing I really think I would struggle to find somebody who would turn it down.
This doesnt necessarily mean that the huge amount of money will then be spent on luxuries. As somebody has mentioned before, how do we know that banksy isn’t handing all the cash to charities and effectively taking from the rich and giving to the poor (LEGALLY!)
Besides nobody has the right to comment on what sort of a person Banksy is for selling his work. It’s HIS work, if somebody is wiling to part with their cash for it then he deserves every penny.

if you think banksy comes out right and sells his paintings himself you are a fool… first off if you looked at the first peices he made and how much they sold for it was really outrageous and they werent ment to be sold, what happened was banksy gave some of his freinds his unfinished art and some as gifts and they turned around and sold them for alot of money which frustrated him so now he sells them to his freinds or gets people to sell them for him..
Bates Said,

I don’t why you people think that he sold them for that much all by himself. I think he just wanted to see how much he could squzze out of this person that we put on a pedistill just for lying on camera. I like both of these people for what they do, but I still understand why Banksy dose what he dose. At least I think I understand it.

You people don’t even know where the money go.If he gives the money to support what he believes in, (which i think it’s great as it strengthens love and peace , weakens racism and hate, and of course opens the people’s eyes) then i am more than OK with it and i am willing to buy many pieces of his work to support his dream. well if the money are for his OWN pleasure then i will appreciate his work but I’ll never appreciate him.

i personally know ‘Banksy’- i have spent many childhood years as his companion and now into our adult hood we are still incontact- this man in fantastic- anyone who thinks of ciritising his work is so narow minded its alarming- so what if hes selling to celebrities- its hardly like he has sold out his public persona- to many people this man is still a mystry and hopefully will always remain one.

By the way…… most art sells at AUCTION…. it’s not necessarily what Banksy charges, but what people are willing to pay…

I don’t think people realise the irony of it. The name “I can’t believe how much you people pay for this shit” sold for over 200 grand. The fact that Angelina Jolie bought it illustrates the point about materialism. It refers to his own work too. He’s laughing at the fact that some dumb celebrity paid so much for something he did with stencils and spray paint (I’m not discrediting it there, his work is brilliant). If he was a sell out don’t you think everything he does would be in exhibitions with rediculous admission fees? It’s ironic that she paid so much for something she probably could have looked at any time for free. The man is a genius. But that’s just my opinion. I could be horribly wrong and the whole thing could be an atrocity.

Like with Shepard Fairy, I’m just glad to see a terrific street artist making money to cover lifes expenses. Hopefully he’s putting a decent amount of the proceeds into a 401k or IRA for retirement.

I would like to think that Banksy is taking a majority of the money he has made and turning it over to a good cause. I would also like to believe that Angelina knows exactly that when she hands that type of money over. I don’t get wrapped up in all the Hollywood nonsense but I respect a lot of what she and Brad Pitt do with their celebrity. They, as well as Banksy in my opinion, know what kind of impact that their status and money can provide and all seem to be using it for the greater good. The fact of the matter is that we all live in this mess, like it or not, and you can hide out and wait to die or you can take what you can get and put it to the best use. I say make what you can, especially when you are doing it through the back door, and help as many people to wake up in the mean time.

A fool and her money are soon parted.
Three cheers for Banksy, the snub to the establishment, the ongoing ridicule of the police state … let the visual protest continue.
For those that seek to deride and belittle, painting on a wall, creating images thet provoke thought and engender a realistic view of the world. With a new compilation, newly contrived satire and biting comment, who or where else can you rely on?
Banksy rules, OK

cheese- your post made me sad because its people like you that are walking by Banksy artwork and not even seeing the beauty of it :! I agree, Angelina strikes me as a pretender and i question if she “cares” as much as she says she does but, remember one of his quotes “keep your coins, i want change”- For the world to better itself and to change is going to take to a movement of EVERYONE. Celebrity or not. And if it takes movie stars buying banksy art to get the word out there and to open up peoples eyes as to how simple and beautiful like can be, and how easy and common for evil and ugly to have the upper hand, then so be it. I hope for the good of the people and for the love of art humanity and hope that the message of banksy is shown to the world. Because we need a message like this. And in the long run we all know he strikes deep, because what he is saying is the truth. Some just seem to have gotten lost in the simplicity of it
